On the countryside the timeless beauty of open skies and of the endless steppes remains unchanged. Nevertheless, since the fall of the Soviet empire, Mongolia has a severe hangover. The infrastructures and facilities have never been repaired, droughts have decimated livestock and forced the predominantly nomadic population to migrate to the capital where they eke out under difficult conditions. Most migrants have settled in gers- the traditional portable homes of nomadic families- in the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar, shaping a unique rural/ urban hybrid environment.
